Categorizing
Using Our Senses

Objective
Students will use their senses to categorize a group of objects into smaller groups.
(A previous understanding of categorizing is assumed.)

Major Understandings The Physical Setting 3.1b, c, f

Materials
small boxes
various objects for categorizing
(e.g buttons, rocks, pictures)

Procedure
1. Students will work individually.

2. Give each student a box. Tell students they are to group the objects into smaller groups using their senses. They can make as many or as few groups as they want but must be able to give reasons why they made those groups.

3. Go around and discuss students grouping with them. Take anecdotal notes on their performance.

4. If time permits, have students trade boxes.

Note: Students are working individually in order to assess performance. This activity would also work for small groups.
