Welcome
This unit is based on the topic of food. While primarily focused on language arts, it is a multidisciplinary topic, drawing on concepts from math, science, social studies, music, and art. By starting with food, you can branch out to many areas, such as nutrition, the senses, digestion, comparison studies of animal food consumption, historical studies, growth of plants, farming, animal husbandry, and many others. Additionally, studying food naturally leads to discussions of cultural diversity which could lead to specific culture studies. The topic of food was chosen because of the authentic and meaningful nature of the topic. All children eat food and know many of the words for various foods. Many have been to supermarkets, restaurants, or have helped in cooking foods with their family. Children will be able to make personal connections based on background knowledge and experiences. The literacy activities are those that are found in social situations in the home and community and therefore have an inherent ability to demonstrate purpose and meaningfulness. The main learning objective of the activities is to engage students in shared reading experiences that will foster emergent literacy in contexts that are authentic and meaningful. Teacher will provide extensive modeling of skills using authentic literature in whole and small groups.I hope you find it useful.
